📣 Cheers to You

This past week one of my very first clients—actually, my second paying coaching client ever—published her first book, Be Your Own Cheerleader.

I couldn’t be prouder.

When I met Neelu Kaur, she was in the midst of transitioning from a full-time employee to a full-time entrepreneur, looking for a way to combine her leadership training skills with her deep interest in and commitment to ayurveda practices and wellness.

Fast forward ten years and she’s a highly sought after speaker and presenter bringing her unique blend of knowledge, real world experience, and emotional intelligence to workplaces around the globe.

While her book is specifically designed for Asian and South Asian women who struggle to make a place and space for themselves in their own careers, Neelu’s advice resonates with broader audiences as well.

So many of us are raised to be unseen.

Whether we are trained to be the invisible hand making our families, our households, our loved one’s lives run smoothly and efficiently, or we are marginalized because of some inherent characteristic—our sexual orientation, our neuro-divergency, our introvertedness, etc.

Our needs are rarely, if ever, acknowledged, and we become used to putting ourselves in the corner and keeping out of the spotlight.

It’s no wonder that in our careers and in our businesses, we struggle with imposter syndrome, with lack of confidence, with perfectionism, and so much more, to the detriment of our success.

Maybe you recognize yourself in the above or maybe you recognize someone you know.

If so, here’s a great tip from Neelu on how to talk yourself up or create a ‘humble brag’ about how awesome you are.

“Talk or write about yourself in the third person as though you were talking about a best friend.”

This works because it removes that self-censorship from the equation and helps you see your accomplishments and qualifications from the outside in rather than the inside out.

Neelu includes a ton of these types of practical tools and real-world advice in Be Your Own Cheerleader.

She also shares her 10 Tips To Be Your Own Cheerleader on her website.

Check out her tips and pick up a copy of her book so you can wake up the cheering section that lives within you.

Until next week, give yourself a rah, rah, sis, bom, bah, because you are truly amazing!

PS - If you missed it, last week, I shared my word of the year and some advice about finding yours.

Your success is our strategy!

Easily Said & Done

I help entrepreneurs leapfrog over the typical potholes that derail most small businesses with inspiration, motivation, education, and support across a wide range of business topics drawn from over a decade of running my own business, teaching entrepreneurship for the City of New York, and coaching and consulting privately with dozens of women and minority small business owners. Honestly, why go it alone when help is an email away?

Cross That Finish Line

Back in the early days of the online learning platform Coursera, I took a class in gamification offered by the Wharton School of Business. The ubiquitous application of game design elements across so many areas and sectors of business was in its infancy, and I was intrigued. One of the most fascinating things I learned about is the Goal Gradient Hypothesis, which basically posits that the closer one gets to completing a goal, the more motivated they become. If you've ever watched a marathon...

Learning to Fly

I was planning to write one of those typical messages about getting back into a business mindset now that Labor Day is in the rearview and we’re heading into the busiest time of year for many of us. But, when I sit down to write, I don’t feel the usual back-to-school energy that’s typical for me during the first week of September. Instead, I’m reflecting on my mixed bag of a summer and wishing it weren’t, in everything but name, over. I had such momentum coming into the season and then life...

Help! I Need Somebody

So, you're ready to bring someone in to help you with admin tasks, research, and more. For most business owners, hiring help is a big decision. It's scary giving up that sense of control and relying on somebody else to get things done and do them right. That's why I'm so glad to share this advice from Dianne Bennett, Founder of May I Help You Virtual Services, on finding the right Virtual Assistant (VA) for you. The first thing to understand is that, just like you, a VA is a business owner....
