Treat Yo'self

When I was a kid, my younger brother and I approached Halloween and trick-or-treating like a small business.

We gathered intel from our friends to identify the best houses in the neighborhood. You know, the ones that gave full-size candy bars or multiple treats or just the best selection without an apple or raisin to be found.

We canvassed the 'marketplace' finding the homes with the best decorations—a good indicator of a highly engaged audience.

When we returned home with the profits of our labor, we would:

  • Conduct complex trade negotiations with our older brother,
  • Pay candy taxes to our dad, and
  • Manage our candy cash flow over the next several weeks, making it go as far as our willpower would allow.

Halloween was serious business to us.

That doesn't mean we didn't have a ton of fun.

Don't get me wrong, we loved the candy.

But we also loved dressing up, meeting up with our friends and checking out each other's costumes, carving pumpkins, bobbing for apples (do people still do that?), and watching old, scary movies on the weekends all month long.

As much as we loved getting that candy, I don't think we would have continued to do it year after year if we didn't also really enjoy all the other things about it, too.

I'll admit that as an adult entrepreneur, the fun often gets lost in all the work, strategy, and stress of the day-to-day.

That's why this Halloween week I'm allowing the kidpreneur in me to take over for a couple of days.

I'm hoping she'll tap into the fun of the season and possibly even spark some great creative solutions.

After all, kids are great at keeping things simple, which was the subject of last week's message.

So, what do you say, can the kidpreneur in you come out and play?

Until next week, Reader, have a ton of fun!

Honestly, why go it alone when help is an email away?

Cross That Finish Line

Back in the early days of the online learning platform Coursera, I took a class in gamification offered by the Wharton School of Business. The ubiquitous application of game design elements across so many areas and sectors of business was in its infancy, and I was intrigued. One of the most fascinating things I learned about is the Goal Gradient Hypothesis, which basically posits that the closer one gets to completing a goal, the more motivated they become. If you've ever watched a marathon...

Learning to Fly

I was planning to write one of those typical messages about getting back into a business mindset now that Labor Day is in the rearview and we’re heading into the busiest time of year for many of us. But, when I sit down to write, I don’t feel the usual back-to-school energy that’s typical for me during the first week of September. Instead, I’m reflecting on my mixed bag of a summer and wishing it weren’t, in everything but name, over. I had such momentum coming into the season and then life...

Help! I Need Somebody

So, you're ready to bring someone in to help you with admin tasks, research, and more. For most business owners, hiring help is a big decision. It's scary giving up that sense of control and relying on somebody else to get things done and do them right. That's why I'm so glad to share this advice from Dianne Bennett, Founder of May I Help You Virtual Services, on finding the right Virtual Assistant (VA) for you. The first thing to understand is that, just like you, a VA is a business owner....
